Maine Family Planning—its supporters, its Board and its staff—are deeply saddened by the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Collectively, we send our condolences to her family, loved ones and friends.

Justice Ginsburg was a fierce and unrelenting champion of an individual’s right to choose abortion care. Her absence on the Supreme Court leaves open the very real possibility that she will be replaced by a nominee whose views on reproductive freedom will be at complete variance with hers. Roe vs Wade, the law of the land for nearly 50 years, is at grave risk.

It is now possible that the battle for reproductive freedom will move from the federal level to the states. If Roe falls, Maine’s Reproductive Privacy Act will preserve the right to access abortion for Maine citizens. Based on the tenets contained in the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe, the Reproductive Privacy Act serves as a safe harbor for Mainers seeking to control their reproductive future.

To protect and preserve the rights allowed under Maine’s Reproductive Freedom Act, Maine Family Planning will continue to educate Maine voters about the importance of electing legislators at the state level who will defend the Reproductive Privacy Act against the renewed attacks that are sure to come.

“It is simply impossible to over-estimate the importance of electing state-level legislators who will defend Maine’s Reproductive Privacy Act,” said George Hill, CEO of Maine Family Planning.
